Doubled-Up Spring Base

 

We were disassembling the cylinder heads for a repair on '91 VIN 0037 at 72k miles. We discovered two spring bases under one of the valve springs. The normal base is on the left. When the engine was assembled at the factory, a second base was stacked on it in error. Eventually the upper base was crushed by the spring and it collapsed in two pieces onto the lower base. The shattered stacked up base is on the right. This did not have any effect on the operation of the engine.
